Extracorporeal shockwave treatment (ESWT) involves the application of high-energy, high- amplitude sound pressure waves to tissues. This stimulates cells to express growth factors and other molecules that improve healing and decrease pain. In addition to reducing inflammation and pain, ESWT improves blood flow/supply, increases bone formation in fracture healing, realigns tendon fibers (improving the degree and rate of tendon healing) and enhances wound healing. One recent study found that dogs with unilateral hip arthritis who had ESWT treatment developed a more symmetrical gait after use. Another study found that ESWT for elbow arthritis resulted in improved weight-bearing, similar to what is expected with NSAIDs.
