NMES (“e-stim”) is the application of low-frequency electrical impulses to a muscle or muscle group stimulating their contraction. This can help to mimic muscle use for animals that are not able to bear weight or are not using a particular muscle properly. This modality can help with muscle re-education, prevention of muscle atrophy, and enhanced joint movement. This modality is helpful when treating orthopedic or neurological diseases that cause muscle disuse.
Patients recovering from orthopedic surgery, fracture repair, spinal cord injury, and other neurological and orthopedic issues may benefit from electrical stimulation. E-stim may also be used to aid in pain management or to help reduce swelling or edema. A pet that is unable to use its limb immediately after surgery may be prescribed several sessions of electrical stimulation. This therapy will help your pet maintain its muscle mass during this period.
