Manual Therapy/Massage

Manual therapy involves movement of soft tissues (muscles, fascia, nerves, etc.) and joints to assess and treat soft tissue abnormalities, joint dysfunction and pain. It involves skilled diagnosis of mobility and functional restrictions to guide the careful application of movement and appropriate pressure to the tissues. Specific techniques such as joint mobilizations, traction, glides, and stretching, to obtain the desired physiological effect.

Massage aids in the circulation of fluids throughout the body which assists the joints and muscles flush toxins from the tissues. The results include reduced pain and stiffness, more flexibility and greater range of motion. Massage also increases blood flow, lowers blood pressure and improves cardiovascular health.

It is important to check the most common muscle groups for pain depending on your pet’s condition. Oftentimes, even though a pet has a painful joint due to arthritis, they also have compensatory pain in other muscle groups. For example, dogs experiencing hip pain due from osteoarthritis, will shift their weight forward, putting extra stress on the shoulders, forelimbs and upper back.

Stretching your pet’s muscles can aid in healing, improve flexibility and reduce risk of injury in working or pet athletes.

Dr Amy can perform massage and stretching during the rehab session and also instruct you about how you can help your pet at home to stay comfortable between sessions.
